What Exactly Does a Chiropractor Do? (Explained simply by a Chiropractor!)

When you hear the word “chiropractor,” you might think of someone who adjusts backs and fixes neck pain, and that’s not wrong—but it’s more complex than that!  As a chiropractor, my role is about much more than just relieving discomfort. I focus on helping people live healthier, more balanced lives by working with the body’s natural ability to heal itself, particularly through the spine.

Understanding Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is built on the idea that many health issues stem from problems in the spine, particularly from something called vertebral subluxations. These are essentially misalignments in the spine that can interfere with how well your nervous system works. Since the nervous system controls everything from your muscles to your organs, any disruption here can lead to various health issues. My job is to correct these misalignments, allowing your body to function as it should.

What I love most about chiropractic care is its holistic approach. The body is an incredible self-regulating, self-healing machine. When something’s off, like a misaligned spine, it can throw everything else out of balance. By addressing these issues, I’m not just focusing on pain relief; I’m helping your entire body work better.

What Happens During a Chiropractic Visit?

When you come to see me, we start with a conversation. I want to understand not just your immediate symptoms, but your overall health and lifestyle. This might include discussing your medical history, any current discomfort, and even aspects of your daily routine that could be affecting your well-being. Sometimes, I’ll recommend an X-ray or other imaging to get a clearer picture of what’s happening with your spine.

Once I’ve got all the information, I’ll put together a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This usually involves spinal adjustments—painless, manual manipulations aimed at realigning your spine and reducing nerve interference. These adjustments are personalised to you because no two bodies are exactly the same and what works for one person might not be ideal for another.

But chiropractic care doesn’t stop at adjustments. Depending on your situation, I might use soft tissue therapy, which involves massaging and stretching muscles to relieve pain and improve mobility. I may also guide you through exercises designed to strengthen your muscles and support your recovery. And since overall health isn’t just physical, I often provide advice on diet, stress management, and lifestyle changes to help you maintain your well-being.

It’s About More Than Just Pain Relief

Most people come to a chiropractor because they’re dealing with some sort of pain—whether it’s in the back, neck, or elsewhere. While chiropractic care is highly effective at relieving pain, its benefits extend far beyond that. By improving how your nervous system functions, chiropractic adjustments can also enhance other areas of your health – people report all sorts of benefits, some of which are supported by research, and some of which are simply the way people feel. Our patients have reported everything from better sleep to improved digestion, more energy, and even a stronger immune system.

Chiropractic care isn’t just reactive either; it’s proactive. Many people visit chiropractors regularly, not because they’re in pain, but because they want to stay healthy and prevent issues before they start. Athletes, for example, often use chiropractic care to enhance their performance, prevent injuries, and recover faster when they do get hurt.

If you’re dealing with a chronic condition, chiropractic care can be incredibly beneficial. I’ve worked with patients who have conditions like arthritis, sciatica, and migraines, and regular adjustments have made a huge difference in their quality of life. By focusing on the spine and nervous system, chiropractic care helps manage pain and discomfort, allowing you to enjoy life more fully.

Working Together for Your Health

One of the aspects of my job that I’m particularly passionate about is collaboration. Chiropractic care often works best when it’s part of a broader healthcare plan. I frequently work with other healthcare providers, such as medical doctors, physical therapists, and other spinal specialists, to ensure you’re getting the most comprehensive care possible. It’s not about replacing traditional medicine but complementing it.

For example, if you’re dealing with chronic lower back pain, we might combine chiropractic adjustments with physical therapy exercises to strengthen your core and advice on anti-inflammatory diets to support your overall health. This team approach addresses all aspects of your health, leading to better and longer-lasting outcomes.

More Than Just a “Back-Crack”!

As a chiropractor, my role goes far beyond just adjusting backs and necks. I’m here to help you achieve and maintain a healthier, more balanced life by focusing on the spine and the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Whether you’re dealing with pain, managing a chronic condition, or simply looking to stay healthy, chiropractic care offers a safe, effective way to support your overall well-being.
